Verstappen – It’s a No for Ferrari and Other Comments!

While Max Verstappen has been around for a while now, he is still young and arguably has the best racing years still ahead of him. His time at Red Bull has certainly been impressive, but 2020 will see him out of contract with the team. He may well choose to stay with Red Bull, a team that has been very good to him. At the moment though, discussions and rumours are circling on what he might do next.

Ferrari

Speaking on a Dutch TV channel, Verstappen said he would not move to Ferrari and race alongside his rival Charles Leclerc. The main reason he cited was that he felt it wasn’t a good idea for a team to have 2 number 1 drivers. It does seem wise for him not to be drawn into a PR fuelled head to head battle within a team, we all remember what a mess that can cause!

Mercedes

So, these recent comments about Ferrari then fuel the next question…how about Mercedes? If we take the logic of the Leclerc statement, it would seem obvious that it must be a no for running up against Hamilton who will clearly still be Mercedes No 1 in 2020. However, his comments are much vaguer on this subject. He said he hasn’t thought about it too much and ultimately it is down to the team to decide. This would suggest that he would be interested in moving to Mercedes and certainly doesn’t seem put off by battling Hamilton.

Anyone Could Do It…Almost

Verstappen has also suggested that while he agrees that Hamilton should be in the F1 top drivers of all time, it is important to understand how good the car has been. It has long been agreed that Mercedes have dominated the sport over recent years, and this is in no small part down to the cars. However, Max went a bit further and claimed 60% of the F1 grid could be world champ if they had Hamilton’s car. He also made it clear he would expect himself to count in that list.

You may or may not feel you belong on the list of people who could win if you had a Mercedes, but either way if you race and need advice on fire suppression or are looking for something unique for your car, then please get in touch with us at FEV today.
